In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 94:19
Keep the psalms and they will keep you.
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III
And so on the whole, each psalm is both spoken and composed by the Spirit so that in these same words... the stirrings of our souls might be grasped, and all of them said as concerning us, and the same issue from us as our own words, for a remembrance of the emotions in us, and a chastening of our life.
St. Athanasius
On the Interpretation of the Psalms
As in any meditation, do not argue with the thoughts expressed, or wonder about the person who wrote them. Just let those words become your words! Absorb them. They will help you express feelings that you may never be able to put into words. As the words become your words, rejoice in the knowledge that "the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit" (Romans 8:16). By using the spirit of the Psalms, we can learn just how much God shares with us, and we with Him.
